Everyday carry · 5 min read
A bag for the day you already have.
Capacity is only useful when the bag remains comfortable, easy to access, and suitable for the places it goes.
1. Lay out a typical day
Place the items you normally carry on a table. Separate daily essentials from occasional extras, then note the largest rigid item. If a laptop is included, use its actual dimensions rather than the screen's diagonal size.
2. Add access to capacity
A single large space is flexible; dedicated compartments can make frequently used items easier to reach. Check how the bag opens in a crowded place, whether small items disappear at the bottom, and whether a bottle or umbrella has a stable position.
3. Judge the empty bag
Empty weight, strap shape, back structure, and handle placement affect comfort before anything is packed. If possible, evaluate the return policy and load the bag with your normal items indoors before committing to outdoor use.
4. Match weather and care
“Water resistant” is not the same as waterproof. Look for specific material, coating, seam, and zipper information, plus care instructions. Consider whether the finish can be cleaned in the way your commute requires.
Your shortlist

- Keeps frequently used items accessible.
- Has an acceptable empty weight and adjustable carry.
- Uses materials and care instructions suited to your weather.
