A desk light that works past sunset.

The useful question is not “which lamp has the most features?” It is “where does the light need to land, for how long, without getting in the way?”

Editorial basis: this is a category-planning guide. It does not rank specific products or claim hands-on tests.

1. Map the desk before the lamp

Measure the clear footprint, the distance from the back edge to your work area, and any shelf or monitor that limits height. Decide whether a base, clamp, or wall-mounted design fits the space without interfering with cables or movement.

2. Define the lighting job

3. Compare useful controls

Dimming can matter more than a very high maximum output. Adjustable colour temperature may be useful when one desk serves daytime work and evening reading, but a simple, well-placed light can be the better fit if the settings would go unused.

4. Check comfort and evidence

Look for clear manufacturer information about brightness, colour temperature range, electrical certification relevant to your market, warranty, and replacement parts. Treat broad claims such as “eye caring” as marketing unless the seller explains the test or standard behind them.

Your shortlist

  1. Fits the available footprint or clamp point.
  2. Reaches the centre of the task without blocking the screen.
  3. Dims low enough for evening use.
  4. Has clear electrical and warranty information.
